With the year round abundance of apples, it is also easy to find apples at a reasonable price…so it is a very economical dessert as well.

Gluten Free Apple Crisp

4 cups of peeled, sliced, and cored tart apples (Granny Smith’s are awesome but really…any apple that you like is good…we have apples in the backyard that I use)

2/3 of a cup of packed, medium dark brown sugar

1/2 cup of all purpose gluten free mix

1/2 cup of certified gluten free oats (the quick cooking kind)

3/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

3/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg (optional…I leave this out because we have a nutmeg allergy in the family)

1/3 cup of butter (you could substitute margarine), softened to room temperature

Preheat the oven to 375 degree Fahrenheit. Grease a glass or metal 8 x 8 inch square baking pan. You can use either butter, coconut oil, or shortening to grease the pan.

Take the cored, peeled and sliced apples and arrange them in the bottom of the greased pan.

In a medium sized bowl, blend the butter and brown sugar until well combined, using a spoon or a fork. If you have a stand mixer, you can use that instead and it works beautifully.

In another bowl, combine the gluten free all purpose mix, gluten free oats, cinnamon and nutmeg until thoroughly combined. You can add a dash of salt at this stage, if you want, it is optional.

Gently add the dry ingredient mix to the well combined butter and brown sugar mix. It will be crumbly when done. Sprinkle this combination over the apples in the greased baking pan. Gently pat it down, making sure that the apples are covered.

Put the baking pan in the preheated oven and bake until the topping is golden brown and the apples are fork tender. This will be approximately 25 to 30 minutes, depending on how thick you have sliced the apples. When the crisp is bubbly and golden, take it out of the oven and set on a cooling rack.

Doesn’t this gluten free apple crisp look good? While still warm, you can serve it with whipped cream or ice cream. Either way, it is delicious! The really neat thing about this recipe is that if you want a crisp and don’t have any apples, you could substitute peaches for the apples.
